Earthtones is the newest and totally best album yet from Bahamas, aka me, Afie Jurvanen.
I wasn’t feeling too inspired in 2016. I’d been in a seemingly unbroken cycle of recording and touring for 6 years. I know, you’re saying to yourself “that’s so cliché̇, all musicians complain about being tired…” But wait, there’s more!
Not knowing exactly what type of album to make, I was feeling pretty low. But at that very moment, my longtime manager and confidante Robbie Lackritz called and said “dude, you should make an album with D’Angelo’s rhythm section.” And just like that, the juices were flowing and the songs started coming.
I wrote songs about having success, having kids, and having depression. I wrote songs about going on tour, going back in time and going in circles. I wrote songs about my other worldly wife, my jerk dad and my garbage relationship with my brother. Crazy right?!
In Sept of 2016 I flew to Los Angeles and spent three days in the studio with the bass boss Pino Palladino and the titan of time keeping, Mr. James Gadson. No rehearsals, no charts, no rules. We worked fast and came away with 10 songs that sounded fresh and strange and warm and free of any genre. The results were so inspiring to me that I quickly pulled my road band (Felicity Williams, Christine Bougie, Darcy Yates, Jason Tait, Don Kerr) into a Prague studio to record a few more songs. And here’s the best part…the whole thing is produced by my longtime producer and confidante Robbie Lackritz, so you know the sound is correct, totally modern and completely familiar at the same time.
Whoa!
I know! You’re saying to yourself “wait what? The same Robbie from earlier??”
Yes! It’s a story about friendship come full circle, and how great it is to have someone in your life that can lift you up when you’re feeling down.
It’s a very positive album about having a joie de vivre for the joys of life. Okay, full disclosure…there’s a few slow jams too…
Hope you enjoy the music as much as I enjoyed making it.
Look forward to speaking with some of you soon (you know who you are.) haha
Sincerely, Afie Jurvanen
We’re going to bring Earthtones to you all over… starting here. If you buy tickets to a show in North America, the album is included. Tickets go on sale next Friday at 10am local except Australia which goes onsale this Monday at 11am local.

Curbing the use of single-use plastic has been at the forefront of Jack’s work for over a decade. Since 2005, Jack and his touring crew have implemented a plastic free backstage and since 2007 all shows have offered fans free water through water-refill stations. In 2014, Jack successfully helped launch a Reusable Pint Program at the Santa Barbara Bowl, which has since inspired venues across the country to follow suit, including the Les Schwab Amphitheatre in Bend, OR, and all venues owned by Live Nation. This summer, more venues will adopt a Reusable Pint Program, which provides fans with an alternative to disposable plastic cups. Fans who purchase this reusable stainless steel cup at venue concessions will receive a discount on all beverage refill purchases for the life of the cup.
In addition to these plastic free initiatives, Jack and his production team, alongside Reverb, will continue to pave the way in green touring practices with extensive sustainability programs at every show. Visit www.jackjohnson.com/greening to learn more.

Pre Order the new ALO “Love Songs” EP befor they head out on their Tour d’Amour. It features covers by New Order, Curtis Mayfield, Johnny Nash, & The Turtles. In Stores Jan 27th.
Our friend Neil Halstead has released several beautiful solo records over the years, 2 of which – Oh Mighty Engine, and Palindrome Hunches – we were fortunate enough to put out. If you’ve not heard them, you are really missing out.
His band Slowdive reformed last year and played a lot of festivals and a notably great show here in Los Angeles. They are a different animal than Neil’s solo work and his work in Mojave 3, but equally amazing. We were pretty excited to take a listen to this new track, looks like they are due to release a new album on Dead Oceans this year…
JUST ANNOUNCED: The 11th annual TOUR D’AMOUR is here! We’re back next February for our West Coast run, but we’re adding an extra week of love with shows in Seattle and Portland in March. Joining us are our friends from The Brothers Comatose, Twiddle, Moon Hooch, and Rabbit Wilde!
Tickets are on sale this Friday at 10am PST.* More to come! #TDAXI #alotour

Jack is celebrating World Oceans Day in New York! World Oceans Day is a global event that inspires people to help create healthier oceans for a healthy planet. Jack is participating in the celebrations at the United Nations, and will be joining friends from the Polynesian Voyaging Society to honor their Malama Honua sail across the world’s oceans.
This morning, Jack had the honor of attending a ceremony with the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Two years ago in Samoa, Ban Ki-moon came aboard the Hokule’a and offered the gift of a message in a bottle, a handwritten note pledging to take action and protect the world’s oceans. Along her sail, the Hokulea Crew has collected 40 pledges from around the world and will return the bottle to the Secretary-General in honor of World Oceans Day.
Catch the Wave for Change by taking action for healthy oceans on World Oceans Day, and every day! Learn more at https://www.worldoceansday.org/
Jack had a great time performing with Paula Fuga and his amazing Turnaround Arts students at Waianae Elementary School and Kamaile Academy. Check out this awesome video celebrating the Power of the Arts in Schools.
